Snow pictures #6 The trees, the trees.

Except that the heavy snow is potentially breaking all of them, the snow sticking to the trees has turned the world into a magical snow streaked wonderland. I have tried to capture some of the views, but it is more spectacular to stand under these trees or look across a clump of them, all painted white.

A closeup of the fruit on those trees in Escanaba. What are they?

Update: Barbara Tiesch, librarian for the Harrisburg Patriot-News, has suggested (via Twitter) that these tress might be Mountain Ash. A quick wikipedia search reveals that these trees look like Sorbus americana. Thanks for your help Barbara, a several year mystery (to me) is now solved. The article says that in the United States they are distributed from the Appalachians from New York to Georgia and out to the Great Lakes.

What is this tree in Escanaba MI

These trees are on the green in front of the lighthouse in Escanaba, MI. They have bright orange berries and interesting leaves. Do any horticulturists out there know what there are?

Freezing rain takes down a tree on Shellpot Creek

Lynn actually heard this tree fall about an hour ago. We ran out to see what happened and see that it has fallen across the creek.



This tree belongs to the folks across the creek and is one of the trees I expected to fall soon. I suppose the freezing rain weighed it down, and the rain of the past few days loosened the soil so that gravity and wind could take it down. Too bad it is completely blocking the creek. I will need to explore my previous picks of across the creek to find a before picture.

Tree Crushes House on Shipley Road In Wilmington

On the way home from work I saw this tree down because of the wind and wet weather we have been having lately. It made me rush home to see if my trees were still standing (no problems).

Crews were there taking the fallen tree the rest of the way down.


It looks like the tree sheared the roof away as it fell on the front of the house. From the ground it did look like there were holes in the roof and crushed areas due to the tree.


This is my fear - more than a tree breaking in half and falling, sometimes they just uproot and fall over. I don't remember anything remarkable about this tree except that it was a tall maple of some sort. Google Maps street view has the before picture.

This wasn't the only tree that fell in Delaware.

Any tree experts or Rangers out there know how to predict when this will happen and prevent it (I guess by cutting the tree before it cuts you)?
